The architecture of a night

Sleep moves in cycles of roughly 90 minutes, each descending through light and deep sleep and surfacing into REM — the stage of rapid eye movement where most vivid dreaming happens. Early cycles are rich in deep sleep, which restores the body; toward morning, REM stretches longer and longer, which is why your most elaborate dreams come just before waking, and why cutting sleep short trims dreams disproportionately.

What dreaming seems to be for

Researchers do not fully agree on why we dream, but leading accounts converge on a few functions. During REM the brain replays and reorganizes the day's experience, which supports memory consolidation. Emotional processing is equally central: REM sleep dampens the charge on difficult memories, functioning as a kind of overnight therapy. Other accounts emphasize simulation — dreams as a safe rehearsal space for threats and social situations — which fits how often we dream of being chased, embarrassed or tested.
